Picnic season is in full swing, and we love heading to the park, the beach, or hitting a trail for a little outdoor fun. Wherever in the great outdoors you’re heading, you probably need a good blanket to veg out on. One that’s cozy on one side, and waterproof on the other. Lucky for you, we’re going to show you how to make your own portable picnic blanket, with help from VELCRO® Brand VELSTRETCH® Straps!
Materials:
– 3 yards of oilcloth
– 3 yards of a fuzzy material you like
– paper clips
– VELCRO® Brand VELSTRETCH® Straps
Tools:
– fabric scissors
– sewing machine
In terms of fabric, we went for fun summery patterns. If you don’t know what oilcloth is, it’s a material similar to vinyl that is waterproof. Most fabric stores stock it – you just might need to ask at the register.
We’re love the contrast of stripes and polka dots!
First, lay your fuzzy fabric on the oil cloth, inside to inside. Cut the fuzzy fabric on two inches on all sides so that the oilcloth is 2 inches larger than the fuzzy fabric. Snip at each corner so you’ll be able to fold down the oilcloth over the fabric.
Use paper clips to fold the oilcloth over the fabric. For this project, regular old paper clips act as sewing pins because oilcloth is not a material you can iron.
This is how your whole blanket should look.
Now it’s time to stitch. Sew all the way around. The best part about oilcloth is that it doesn’t fray, so you don’t need to worry about folding seams.
Once you’re down, you’re blanket should look like this. So fun!
Fold each long side of your blanket into the middle. Then fold from the edges in. This will create a little square.
Wrap the VELSTRETCH® Straps around your folded blanket. Use a Sharpie to mark where the middle of each strap meets your blanket – this is where you’ll sew the straps onto the blanket.
Back to the sewing machine!
And now you’ve got two handy straps on your blanket, ready for all your fun summer adventures!
