Halloween has become a huge holiday in the USA with many families going all out decorating their yards. It’s a great opportunity to mix and match traditional Halloween plants and scary decorations with seasonal vegetables and flowers.
But you can also go a little further by utilizing some of the great landscape plants around your home, too. Why just decorate your front doorway, patio or walkway with pumpkins and chrysanthemums when you can integrate your Halloween decorations into your existing landscape plants? You can even use this as an excuse to buy a new fall flowering shrub.
First, look for some colorful fall shrubs that can be the basis of your Halloween show. I love panicle hydrangeas. These shrubs grow anywhere from 3 to 10 feet tall depending on the variety. They produce white fading to pink and red colored flowers that offer the most color just as October rolls around. Plus, the flowers will dry right on the shrub holding their color for weeks. Other nice fall foliage, flowering or fruiting shrubs include smokebush, evergreen hollies, and hardy hibiscus.
Once you have your landscape plant, then get creative with the Halloween decorations. Gather or buy corn stalks. I like using Indian corn stalks for their colorful ears. Peel back the corn wrappers to show their color. We also used ‘Strawberry Popcorn’ stalks this year. Not only are the ears gorgeous, we can pop the kernels after the big holiday is done.
Wrap the stalks together with VELCRO® Brand Garden Ties and VELCRO® Brand One-Wrap Ties to keep them united. You might even attach the stalks to a stake to help keep it vertical.
Then mix and match other fall classics such as pumpkins, chrysanthemums, winter squashes and fall leaves to create a beautiful Halloween decoration right in the middle of your garden.
