How to Make a DIY Face Mask – 8 Easy Methods

To slow the spread of coronavirus, the CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.

Since surgical masks and N-95 respirators should be reserved for health workers and other medical first-responders, they recommend making a DIY face mask fashioned from household items or made at home using common, low cost materials.

To give you a helping hand, here are 8 easy ways to make a homemade, no-sew face mask.

DIY Bandana Face Mask

One of the easiest ways to make a homemade face mask without a sewing machine is with a bandana (or any other fabric you have lying around the house) and two hair ties. This is the method recommended by the CDC and it can be reused as long as you wash and dry it thoroughly. Reduce ear strain by fixing one of our reusable ties to each hair tie to make a more comfortable fastener.

DIY Paper Towel Mask

Another option is to fashion yourself a DIY mask using paper towels and hair ties. This is the same as the bandana method but it’s a good disposable option.

Need a mask but don’t have time to sew? Grab an old t-shirt and make this DIY no-sew face mask in minutes. All you need for this quick and easy DIY mask is an old t-shirt of your choice and a pack of VELCRO® Brand Sticky Back for Fabrics Tape.
